About Us

Our Approach to Restoration

We combine traditional knowledge with modern science to restore the Wairoa River’s mauri (life force). Using the Mauriora framework and the Mauri Monitoring Protocol, we assess the river’s health and identify critical areas for improvement. Our collaboration with the Wairoa District Council on the Wastewater Discharge Consent ensures decisions prioritize the long-term well-being of both the river and the community.

Guided by Kotahitanga (Unity), we bring together diverse expertise to achieve our shared goal of restoring the river’s vitality. The Wairoa River is a living entity deserving of respect and care. By honoring values like kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga, and kotahitanga, we strive to ensure a thriving awa that sustains future generations, just as it has sustained us.

Our Core Values

Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship)

We embrace our role as kaitiaki (guardians) of the river, understanding that we must protect it not only for ourselves but for future generations. This stewardship requires us to act in harmony with the natural world and make decisions that support the long-term wellbeing of the ecosystem.

Manaakitanga (Care and Hospitality)

Just as we care for the people in our community, we show the same care for the river. Our relationship with the awa is one of respect and reciprocity—we care for the river, and it sustains us in return.

Whanaungatanga (Kinship and Relationships)

Our project is built on the strength of our relationships. This includes the relationship between tangata whenua and tangata tiriti, between different generations, and between people and the natural environment. The awa is part of our extended family, and this connection drives our passion for restoration.

Rangatiratanga (Authority and Leadership)

We exercise rangatiratanga by taking ownership of the restoration process and making decisions that align with the needs of our community. As leaders, we are responsible for ensuring that the restoration of the river reflects our collective aspirations.
